THE WINDOW COMPANY (CONTRACTS) JOINS FIRE DOOR DEBATE

Leading commercial installer, The Window Company (Contracts) has become an Associate Member of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), in part so that it can join the ongoing debate surrounding the replacement of fire doors in social housing projects.

David Thornton, Chairman of the award-winning Chelmsford-based business, has joined the BWF’s Fire Door Safety Week 2021 Working Group to give an installer’s perspective on the issue which continues to disrupt

ONE YEAR ON – WHAT HAVE WE LEARNT?

ONE YEAR ON – WHAT HAVE WE LEARNT?

As the industry approaches a year of living with Coronavirus, David Thornton, Chairman of award-winning commercial installer The Window Company (Contracts) has been considering what businesses like his have learnt from the experience.

Even businesses with well-rehearsed and well-documented crisis management plans in place were caught out by the speed of events last March. At the time, our focus was solely on survival and, while our volumes were down and our margins took quite a hit overall because of the issues we faced obtaining stock, we are very much still standing.

NO JAB, NO JOB?

NO JAB, NO JOB?

Charlie Mullins from Pimlico Plumbers might just have been chasing publicity again when he announced that he would be imposing a ‘No jab no job’ rule on his staff; but he has nonetheless raised an issue which almost all employers who send staff to work in people’s homes must surely been considering over recent weeks.

Open at What Cost?

Open at What Cost?

Like every other commercial business currently carrying out installs and upgrades in the social housing sector, we are open and determined to stay open, but I am increasingly asking myself, at what cost?

In the simplest terms, our business is measuring an aperture, ordering a window or door and fitting it. Add on selling it and getting paid to the beginning and the end of that, and you’ve got most of the picture.

RESILIENCE AND OPTIMISM

RESILIENCE AND OPTIMISM

For most of us, 2020 isn’t a year we’ll particularly want to look back on. Who would have thought that, at the start of the year, our biggest worry was the impact of Brexit – although, come to think of it…

The Pandemic has obviously wrought untold misery and heartache and, while the vaccine is a light at the end of the tunnel, more than 30 million of us are still facing Christmas and the New Year under Tier 3 restrictions.

International Volunteers Day (IVD)

International Volunteers Day (IVD)

Tomorrow is International Volunteers Day (IVD) so, in honour of that, we’re shining the spotlight on our Commercial Director, Mark Crane, who quietly and modestly gives up his time to help others.

Every year from November to March, Mark volunteers at a homeless shelter in Hertfordshire cooking dinner, offering support, helping the guests with clean clothing and sometimes just being someone to sit in the warm with and watch TV. He is also a regular helper at his local scout’s group.

The Window Company (Contracts) joins ACDM

Specialist commercial installer The Window Company (Contracts) has become the first installation only company to be invited to join the Association of Composite Door Manufacturers (ACDM) as an affiliate member.

The ACDM is broadening membership to include the entire composite doorset supply chain from component supply to installation, as it aims to engage with more of those involved in the market. This is in line with its stated aim of promoting the highest levels of product and service standards and giving specifiers and end users confidence not only in the safety and security of the product they are buying, but in the quality of the installation as well.

SUPPORTING OUR LOCAL FOODBANK

SUPPORTING OUR LOCAL FOODBANK

We’re a family business built on family values of taking care of each other and looking after our neighbours. That’s why we’re really pleased to be able to support the work of our local Chelmsford foodbank which provides food and support to people in crisis.

The pandemic has probably been cruellest to those who were already struggling; but there have also been many who have fallen through the cracks of the government support schemes and are now having to turn to foodbanks for the first time in their lives.

We thankfully find ourselves on the right side of the coronavirus lottery, but there are many who have not been so fortunate and as individuals and as a business, we want to do our bit to help.
